Plus, I like pictures of water — probably because I grew up in a city that is one of the world’s largest that does not sit on a natural body of water. Its location is explained by the presence of the gold-bearing ore that runs miles deep in an arc around the city. The absence of natural water has led to the logically obvious step of developers building large artificial lakes that inevitably turn foul and surrounding them with faux Mediterranean “villages”, as Ivan Vladislavic explains far more eloquently in his new book.
